What's Tribal Jam? It's a not-so-private party, performance and jam session hosted & attended by dancers, musicians, flow artists and other folk from Richmond, and you're invited. If you've never been, it's an event unlike any other. Drums! Bellydance of all persuasions! Fire! Beauty in a hundred forms!
Where is it? Brett's schwanky pad in Richmond's West End, 1627 Swansbury Dr, Richmond, VA 23233. Be nice to the neighbors & say thanks to Brett for welcoming everyone to his big, inviting home.
How much does it cost? $5 suggested donation –or- a dish to share I'm lost! No, really, where is it? There are directions below! Look down. :)
But I'm a newbie! Won't I feel silly? It really is totally open to people of any level. If you aren't sure how to jump in, look for the members of To the Earth, who can help get you started. And come to classes! They'll introduce you to things you can practice all night long. Tribal jam is a participatory, community event - but you are welcome to tuck yourself into a corner and watch if you're timid about learning. We think we can talk you out of that corner.
What should I bring? Snacks or drinks to share (things like extra cups and plates are also handy), music, instruments (if you have extra percussion particularly, it's great to lend out to newbies), practice toys (again, extras for newbies are sweet) if you spin, hoop, etc. You may also want a little bit of cash, as there may be folk bringing items to sell. If you've got things you'd like to sell, give us a shout ahead of time so we can plan space.
Whatever shall I wear? Pretty much anything. Folks tend to come in various stages of costume, from full on tribal regalia to jeans and a hip scarf. Just come dressed to move and have a good time - whatever that means to you!
But I don't have a drum! I'll be left out! There are usually extras. Also, you can play finger cymbals, shakers, melody instruments, etc - you'll find something.
What's the schedule? 6pm, people arrive & stay until... There is no formal show at this TJ, just a big dance party!
Where should I put the kids? They're welcome (at any age) as participants with their families. If you'd take your kids to any other party, bring them along - they'll have fun at this one.
Where's the fire? Tribal Jam is fire-friendly - please keep fire & supplies on the back drive.
Where's the hooch? It's not really that kind of party. But. You are welcome to bring your own drinkies and can store your drinks in the kitchen; label them if you aren't planning to share.
